The role of language in occupational safety

Language can prevent accidents – if it is understood. Why clear communication is a safety factor.

Safety begins with understanding. In Swiss companies with multicultural teams, linguistic diversity is part of everyday life. But this also harbours risks: safety instructions that are not understood can have fatal consequences. According to studies, language barriers are among the most common causes of accidents at work – often with serious consequences.

What's the problem Technical terms, dialects, fast communication – many instructions get lost in the stress of everyday working life. Added to this is a reluctance to ask questions when something is unclear. The result is misconduct and misunderstandings. This often leads to safety hazards for everyone in the workplace.

What can be done to help?

  1. Establish simple and clear language in the workplace

Sentences such as ‘Wear your safety goggles’ instead of ‘Safety equipment must always be used’ are clearer and more direct.

  2. Use visual materials

Step-by-step instructions with pictures or videos are particularly effective – also for repetition.

  3. Make training interactive

Ask questions, repeat what has been learned, practise with real work equipment – this increases understanding.

  4. Train managers

They need to recognise when language becomes a barrier – and how they themselves can communicate more clearly.
